The Federal Government has outlined plans to review and implement new measures aimed at addressing challenges in primary education, including the issues of out-of-school children and “learning poverty.”
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing challenges in primary education by focusing on improving teacher quality, enhancing the school environment, and ensuring efficient governance. It also pledged to support local and state governments in achieving universal basic education.
Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaba Ahmad, shared this during the opening ceremony of a nationwide training and sensitization workshop for the 774 local government Education Secretaries, held on Tuesday in Abuja. The workshop was organized by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
Dr. Ahmad highlighted the importance of the training, emphasizing that local governments hold the constitutional responsibility for delivering primary education.
She stated, “It is essential to have trained, competent managers and effective supervisors at the local government level. Education is a top priority for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The Federal Ministry of Education is analyzing critical issues in the sector and developing new initiatives and strategies to achieve tangible results. Ongoing programmes under the ministry, such as the Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education, require review, redirection, and proper coordination to reduce the number of school-age children not attending school.
“The ministry remains committed to improving key factors that affect education quality, such as teacher competency, the school environment, instructional materials, and effective governance and supervision.”
Dr. Ahmad urged the trainees to apply the knowledge gained from the workshop to enhance service delivery in their roles.
UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, explained that the workshop aimed to train and sensitize local government education secretaries, who are responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of primary schools in their jurisdictions.
He stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in fund management, ensuring resources are used effectively for their intended purposes. Bobboyi also assured participants of UBEC’s continued support, particularly in training to enhance their expertise in educational management.
