Blackout: We’re making every effort to restore power in the North – TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reports that it is working closely with the Office of the National Security Adviser to repair the vandalized Shiroro-Kaduna line, which has resulted in reduced bulk electricity supply to Kaduna, Kano, and other major cities in the North.

In a statement, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, assured that TCN is working diligently to restore bulk power supply as quickly as possible, despite ongoing security challenges.

“During the hearing, Engr. (Mrs.) Nafisatu Ali highlighted that the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, a key power source for Northern Nigeria, was vandalized by insurgents. In response, TCN has partnered with the Office of the National Security Adviser to secure the area, allowing engineers to work safely on restoring the line,” Mbah stated.

Engr. Ali further noted that deploying engineers without security support is unfeasible due to regional risks. She dispelled any notion of indefinite delays, emphasizing TCN’s commitment to reliable electricity supply nationwide and the steps being taken to enhance security.

Mbah explained that the recent outage affecting Northern states is due to the vandalism of the Shiroro-Mando transmission line—a critical supply route. She added that insecurity in the region has hindered immediate repairs.

“As a temporary measure, TCN rerouted bulk power through the Ugwuaji-Apir 330kV line, though this line recently experienced a disruption as well,” she added.

TCN is actively collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser to ensure engineers can access the vandalized site safely for repairs, prioritizing the safety of all involved.

“We are fully committed to overcoming these challenges, recognizing the vital role electricity plays in the socio-economic lives of the people. We are determined to resolve these issues and restore power to the affected areas as quickly as possible,” Mbah concluded.
