Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has reaffirmed his commitment to promoting justice, accountability and democratic values in Nigeria.
The governor stated this in Lagos at the launch and public presentation of a book titled “Gani Fawehinmi and the Nigerian Press,” held to mark the 88th posthumous birthday of the late human rights lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi.
Sani described the book, written by Basirat Fawehinmi-Biobaku, as a significant contribution to preserving the legacy of the late legal icon and deepening public understanding of his lifelong struggle for justice and press freedom.
Reflecting on his personal relationship with Fawehinmi, the governor said the legal luminary played a key role in shaping his intellectual development and approach to public service.
“He influenced my way of thinking and strengthened my belief in the power of knowledge and justice,” Sani said.
He recalled the June 12 pro-democracy struggle, noting Fawehinmi’s courage and resilience during a period marked by repression and detention of activists.
According to him, the late activist’s sacrifices contributed significantly to the expansion of Nigeria’s democratic space.
The governor further disclosed that his involvement in the Gani Fawehinmi Scholarship Scheme led to the sponsorship of over 400 indigent students from Northern Nigeria, many of whom have excelled in their respective fields.
He said the experience inspired the establishment of the Uba Sani Foundation to improve access to education for the less privileged.
Sani also paid tribute to journalists, lawyers and activists whose sacrifices, he said, secured the freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.
He emphasised that the values of truth, justice and accountability, as exemplified by Fawehinmi, must continue to guide national development.
The governor reiterated his administration’s resolve to uphold those ideals in building a more just and united Nigeria.
