The Nigerian Army has commissioned newly renovated housing units at Kotoko Barracks as part of efforts to improve the welfare of troops and their families.
The project is coming amid sustained military operations across the country, with welfare increasingly seen as a key factor in boosting morale and enhancing operational effectiveness.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Kaduna, the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shuaibu, represented by the Chief of Administration, Army Headquarters, Isa Mahdi Abdullahi, said the project reflected the commitment of the Army leadership to the wellbeing of personnel.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to prioritising the welfare of its personnel. This project is part of our ongoing efforts to improve living conditions within our barracks,” he said.
He urged beneficiaries to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities.
“We expect occupants of these renovated structures to make good use of them and maintain the facilities for long-term benefit,” he added.
The Army authorities said the project involved the renovation of three blocks of 30-family Corporal and Private Quarters, one block of Senior Non-Commissioned Officers’ quarters, as well as a 60,000-litre solar-powered borehole.
Some personnel at the barracks described the development as timely, noting that decent accommodation remained essential to morale, family stability and effective service delivery.
“Housing is more than shelter. When soldiers live in decent conditions, it strengthens morale and allows them to focus better on their duties,” one of the personnel said.
The commissioning of the renovated quarters is expected to ease accommodation challenges and improve the quality of life for troops serving at the barracks and their families.
