NPC Launches 2024 Study to Combat Maternal and Infant Mortality
The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced the 2024 Nigeria Verbal and Social Autopsy (VASA) study, aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality across Lagos State and the nation.
During a press conference in Lagos on Thursday, NPC Lagos State Federal Commissioner, Mrs. Saidat Oladunjoye, emphasized the study’s significance, describing it as a transformative initiative for improving the health and well-being of mothers and children.
She explained that the VASA study, conducted nationwide in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health, is designed to uncover the causes of under-five and maternal deaths in communities.
“This round builds on the 2014 and 2019 studies, which provided critical data to shape health policies and interventions to reduce preventable deaths,” Oladunjoye stated.
The study follows the 2023-2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) completed in May.
“We are revisiting NDHS households to collect information that will help the government understand and address the biomedical and social causes of deaths among children under five and women of reproductive age,” she added.
Key details of the study include:
- Scope: The study will gather data on maternal and child mortality, focusing on the social and health-related factors contributing to these deaths.
- Fieldwork: Conducted from November 21 to December 15, trained data collectors will visit selected communities across Lagos State to interview families and document the circumstances surrounding these losses.
- Impact: The findings will inform policies and interventions to improve maternal and child health across the state and country.
Oladunjoye called for public cooperation, assuring participants that their contributions would be treated with respect and confidentiality.
“By sharing your experiences and engaging with our teams, you are directly contributing to efforts to prevent unnecessary losses and secure a healthier future for our families,” she said.
