The Kaduna State Government has stepped up measures to prepare for possible flooding following forecasts indicating that the state may experience above-normal rainfall during the 2026 rainy season.
The move follows the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction released by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which identified Kaduna among states at high risk of flooding.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, said rainfall in Kaduna State is expected to commence between May 19 and June 10, and end between October 5 and October 21.
The statement also warned of a possible twenty-one-day dry spell between June and August, a situation that could worsen environmental and weather-related challenges across the state.
Malam Maiyaki said the government was taking the forecast seriously and had strengthened public awareness and emergency preparedness measures aimed at protecting lives and property.
According to him, the Ministry of Information and Culture, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency, has commenced a statewide sensitization campaign on flood prevention and safety measures.
He urged residents to clear drainage channels, avoid dumping refuse into waterways, and adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of flooding.
The Commissioner also appealed to traditional and religious leaders, media organizations, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to support government efforts through public enlightenment and environmental sanitation campaigns.
The statement added that emergency response agencies had begun vulnerability assessments in flood-prone communities while strengthening rescue and response arrangements ahead of the peak of the rainy season.
